Angiotension II Receptor Blockers, also referred to as ARBs are a group of medications that affect a molecule called Angiotensin II which is a chemical formed in the blood.

Angiotensin causes muscles surrounding blood vessels to contract – this narrows the blood vessels.

As the narrowing occurs, high blood pressure or Hypertension occurs.

Angiotension II Receptor Blockers are medications the block this action.

The result is that the blood vessels enlarge or dilate and blood pressure is reduced.

Kidney disease can also be improved or slowed due to decreased pressure caused by hypertension.

The mechanism of action is similar to another group of medications called ACE inhibitors which also works on Angiotensin II.
