Appendix

The appendix is an area of the intestines whose true function is less than presently understood. It is most known for the surgery that is done when there are serious symptoms of abdominal pain and discomfort.

It is also referred to as Vermiform Appendix. Vermiform comes from latin – meaning “worm-shaped

The Appendix is a small tube-like pouch that lies near the aspect of the cecum of the Large Intestines.  It is located on the right lower side of the abdomen. The location can vary greatly between individuals.

It has been argued that the purpose of the appendix is no longer necessary to the human race today, but that possibly it was a necessary organ of the past.

The appendix itself often becomes infected and without surgery can, in most cases, cause serious harm without its removal.

Possible uses of the Appendix:

1.)  Immune Function

–  Possible function during fetuses stages

–  Possible function in adults

2.) Maintaining gut flora

What is Appendicitis?

This is when the appendix has a problem causing inflammation. Often this can be from bacteria, trauma, blockage, or another cause.

Often, the blockage starts out as mucus, stool, food, or other sources of the blockage. Bacteria began to multiply in this trapped area. This can affect the lining of the appendix.

Sometimes the blockage is serious enough that surgery is required. In some cases, the appendix “bursts” prior to treatment. This can become a medical emergency and there have been cases of death associated with this condition.
