Bronchiectasis is a disorder or condition of the Lungs that is from birth (congenital) or can be acquired (developed later in life)

Affects the Large Bronchi causing permanent enlargement.

Due to inflammation or infection and rarely by inhaling a foreign object.

Cystic Fibrosis appears to be present in over 50% of cases of Bronchiectasis.

Other Causes:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Lung fungal infections
  • Tumor
  • Immunodeficiency
  • and others.

Symptoms:

  • Chronic cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Wheezing
  • Mucus/ Sputum production
  • Coughing up blood (hemoptysis)
  • Chest pain
  • Abnormal change in finger and possible in the nail bed (Clubbing)
  • Bluish color of face (Hypoxemia) in later stages

Treatment

Antibiotics

  • Amoxicillin
  • Amoxicillin-clavulanate
  • Ampicillin
  • Tetracycline
  • Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole
  • Macrolides
  • Erythomycin

Bronchoscopy may be important in some cases

Surgical resection is for some individuals determined by a medical professional
