Digitalis Glycosides is often more known as Digoxin.

It is purified from cardiac glycoside and extracted from the foxglove plant.

This medication is sometimes used in a variety of Cardiac Conditions such as:

  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Atrial Flutter
  • Heart Failure
  • and more

This medication is on the World Health Organization List of Essential medications.

There are some concerns that its general use long term may increase the risk of death.

Digoxin

  • Binds to Sodium-Potassium on the sarcolemmal membrane
  • This increases the sodium in the cell
  • This can slow the heart down
  • Must be mindful of digoxin toxicity
