Patent Ductus Arteriosus  or  [PDA] is a Heart defect named after a passageway that allows blood to flow from the right atria to the aorta.

It is considered a congenital Heart defect.

This passageway typically stays open while in utero and immediately following birth the passageway closes.

If it doesn’t close properly – it is considered Patent Ductus Arteriosus.

Prostaglandins, are a group of physiologically active lipid molecules or compounds, play a role in keeping the passageway open.

Prostaglandins normally have a diverse “hormone-like” effect on the body.

There are many different types and functions.

Symptoms

• Usually no symptoms
• Left ventricular failure
• Pulmonary hypertension
• Cardiac murmur “Machinery“
• Tachycardia
• Shortness of breath
• Other respiratory problems

**** Congestive Heart Failure can be a complication

Diagnosis

ECG is usually normal

X-ray can be useful

Echocardiography/Doppler is essential to confirm the diagnosis

MRI and CT can often visualize the defect itself.

Treatment

• Indomethacin causing the closure of the passageway
• Surgical repair
• Antibiotic treatment to limit possible Endocarditis
