Pneumocystis Pneumonia is a type of Pneumonia that is rarely seen in an individual who is healthy.

Was previously known as Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia

Much more common in those affected by HIV or AIDS

Caused by a yeast-like fungus called Pneumocystis jirovecii

This specific type is found, so far, is only in humans.

Routinely was the cause of death for those with AIDS

Usually is seen when the CD4 count drops below 200.

Can also be seen in those with cancer, other immune compromised individuals, and due to certain medications in some cases.

 

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough – often productive
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dyspnea
  • Weight loss
  • Sweating during the night

 

Diagnosis

  • X-ray is essential
  • Sputum study to determine cause agent

 

Treatment

Antibiotics

Trimethoprine + Sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, Septra)
Trimetrexate
Dapsone
Primaquine
Clindaycin
