This is a form of sexual reproduction.  The result of interaction of the
female reproduction and male reproduction can result in pregnancy.

The egg is the key for female reproduction. The egg is produced in the ovaries and are released monthly and is an important role in the female reproduction system.

The egg descends into the fallopian tubes and into the uterus.  Sperm attaches to the egg either in the fallopian tubes or uterus to allow for pregnancy.

Sperm has traveled through the vagina and cervix into the uterus and in some cases continues into the fallopian tubes

Fertilization occus when sperm attaches to the egg and the proper response then follows.
Pregnancy occurs within the female’s uterus and lasts for 9 months.

Ova – female sex cells or gamete are large in size.  They are much larger than the sperm.

These cells mature while in the ovaries.  Oogenesis can be defined as the creation of an ovum.

Vagina

Is a tubular tract that leads from uterus to exterior of female body
Its width and length can stretch during birth and sexual intercourse
The cervix is relatively within the vaginal tract
Bartholin’s glands provide the lubrication for the vagina

Functions of Vagina

1.)    Sexual activity
2.)    ChildBirth
3.)    Pathway or ending point of menstrual blood

Cervix

It is part of the uterus on the lower portion where it follows into the vagina.
It is circular and cylindrical in shape.

The function of cervix is seen for female reproduction.  Another function is the pathway during birth and the “dilation” necessary for birth.   Orgasms in some women are related to cervical narrowing.

In addition – Secondary sex characteritics begin to develp in a female to allow for
breast feeding, birth, and others

Uterus

During gestation the fetus acts as the womb to allow for development of the fetus. The uterus lies between the ovaries and fallopian tubes on one side and the cervix and vagina on the other.

As the egg becomes fertilized it attaches to the wall of the uterus

The wall becomes the endometrium – which provides the adequate nutrition for a successful implantation

Uterus is an organ that during pregnancy can enlarge dramatically.

Fallopian Tubes

These are passage tubules for the egg.

Typically two fallopian tubes are somewhat attached on one end to a set of ovaries while the other attaches to the Uterus

The ovaries are somewhat attached which refers to an open cavity where fimbria rather sweep the egg from the ovary into the fallopian tube.

Occasionally the embryo may implant in the fallopian tubes rather then the endometrium of the uterus  -  this is called “Tubal Pregnancy

Ovaries

It is the similar organ as the testes in the male. These are gonad structures

Females have typically 2 ovaries in the pubic region or lower region of the abdomen.

Ovaries secrete sex hormones – Progesterone and Estrogen – these hormones help control
the sexual organs and characteristics. The monthly menstruation is closely regulated by
hormones from the pituitary gland and those found in the ovaries.
