JB Williams - Thank you for your comment - prevention may be gaining in importance - so far it has been hard to put financial emphysis on something before it happens - especially with regards to medical expenses. Awareness is important as well - knowing that you are at risk and what you can do to either prevent or find out the truth about something is essential. Complimentary therapies are another great place to look!!!

I agree that prevention, especially in light of the fact that no real cure exists for metastisis, is a good thing to do and many lives have probably been saved because of it. I believe that breast cancer cure rates are so high because the prevention efforts that have been enacted have led to the early detection and treatment of breast cancers. With all cancers, it's all about early detection and treatment. More than any other factor, the stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis is the most reliable predictor for treatment success.
What makes some of these aeareness campaigns uncomfortable to many patients is 1) awareness efforts are delivered with a fragmented approach. Money goes to organizations like the ACS but that organization is chartered to help support and cure people with any and all types of cancer. Every group needs considerable attention and funding if a cure is to be found. 2) the main activity of these awareness events seems to be fundraising. Lord knows we need the funds but more trust would ensue if people could see money being put to work as opposed to funding T-shirt companies. and 3) many patients have felt used by the fund raising machines. No one seems to know where all the money goes, besides to pay for shirts and trinkets, none of which directly help the average cancer patient, and last of all, patients realize that very little is being done to find a cure, VS treatment for cancer and we are years away from identifying such a miracle.
Other than that, awareness makes sense. It has worked to rreduce smoking rates which indirectly effect lower cancer rates. Due to the committment and organizational prowess of many women's groups, breast cancer awareness has become a part of our national discussion.
Personally, I'd like to see more written about and more discussions abut how a wide variety of complimentary therapies can lead to an improved quality of life, especaily among those who are suffering.
