Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis is where a certain type of bacteria replaces the normal flora in the Vaginal cavity. This results in symptoms that can be difficult to deal with.

It is one of the many different types or causes of Vaginitis which is an Inflammation process of the tissue of the vagina.

It is most often seen in women of childbearing age though it can affect women of any age. According to the CDC – it is one of the most common vaginal infections of childbearing age.

It is not generally considered a sexually transmitted disease however increased sexual encounters can increase your risk of this type of infection. This may partly due to a change in pH or other factors.

Several bacteria can be involved, the most common is often Gardnerella.  It causes the PH to increase, on average, from 4.5 to 5.0-5.5.

Symptoms

–  Vaginal Itching
–  Redness
–  Pain
–  Burning

Potential Causes

1.)  Often the cause isn’t completely understood.

2.) Overgrowth of bacteria (the not-good kind) is often seen by anaerobes.

3.)  Increase number of sex partners or having a new sexual partner

4.)  Douching may be an increased risk factor as well.

Complications

–  Preterm birth can occur in those women who are pregnant. Additionally, low birth weight is a potential complication.

–  Increased risk following Gynecologic surgery. This condition can worsen following surgery and can cause complications, infection, and can lead to the need for further treatment.

–  Sexually Transmitted Infections. Women with BV are more susceptible to infections such as Herpes, HIV, Chlamydia, and/or Gonorrhea.

–  Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID).  BV can lead to a worse vaginal infection called PID. This is when the infection affects other organs such as the uterus, kidney, fallopian tubes, and more. PID can be a serious medical condition.

Treatment:

Antibiotics
