Hyoscyamine is a medication that falls into the class of Anticholinergic.

It may be known as Levsin, Oscimin, HyoMax-SL, Ed-spaz, Hyosyne, and Anaspaz. It can be broken down further into a category of an antimuscarinic.

Hyoscyamine can increase cardiac output and increase the heart rate. In some cases it lowers blood pressure and dries secretions.

Method of Action

–  It blocks the action of acetycholine at parasymptathetic sites such as:

1.)  Sweat glands
2.)  Salivary glands
3.)  Stomach secretions
4.)  Smooth Muscle
5.)  Smooth Muscles in GI tracts
6.)  Heart Muscles
7.)  Sinoatrial node
8.)  Central Nervous System

Uses: Is used for a variety of GI disorders

–  Pancreatitis
–  Irritable Bowel Syndrome
–  Spastic colitis
–  Peptic Ulcers
–  Abdominal cramping
–  others

Side Effects:

–  Dry mouth
–  Nausea
–  Vomiting
–  Dizziness
–  Fatigue
–  Constipation
–  Abdominal discomfort
