The PANCREAS is an important organ in digestion and in metabolism. It is termed both an exocrine and endocrine gland. First pancreatic enzymes allow for the digestion or “breakdown” of carbohydrates and proteins. Second the pancreas produces hormones such as insulin and glucagon which help regulate the metabolism process of the body. The pancreas is a gland because of the secreation of hormones.
The pancreatic duct leave the pancreas and travels and joins with the common bile duct. Much of the digestive molecules travel along this path. Whereas the hormones enter directly into the blood stream.
The shape of the pancreas is a longer but slim organ that sits behind the stomach. It is typically found on the left side of the abdomen.
