Vitamin B1

Vitamin B1 is a water-soluble Vitamin that is also called Thiamine or thiamin. It is typically synthesized in plants, bacteria, and fungi.

Animals, mammals, and Humans, therefore, must have a dietary intake of Vitamin B1.

This vitamin allows the body to use Carbohydrates as energy. It is a key part in Glucose metabolism. It also helps with the ability of Nerves, Muscles, and Heart.

Lack of this vitamin will cause beriberi – that affects the CNS system and/or the cardiovascular system. Treatment for beriberi is thiamine administration.

A large number of individuals who have a deficiency in Vitamin B1 is due to Alchohol and Alcohol Withdrawal.

Chemically, Vitamin B1 exhibits a pyrimidine ring, thiazole ring, and methylene bridge.

Deficiency

–  Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome can also be seen with deficiency of this vitamin

–  Mainly caused by excess alcohol abuse and thiamine deficiency
