Vulvovaginal Candidiasis

Vulvovaginal Candidiasis is a type of Vaginitis. It can be a type of Yeast infection and is most often caused by Candida albicans but can be caused by other Candida species.

It is often seen in individuals with other medical conditions such as diabetes, HIV, and pregnancy.

It also can occur in those with a predisposition caused by previously taking antibiotics and corticosteroids. This can be often seen. Obesity, smoking, and other risk factors can occur as well.

Candida infection is attracted to heat, warmth, moisture

Symptoms:

–  Skin redness
–  Skin swelling
–  Vaginal or skin itchiness  (Pruritus)
–  White curd like material
–  Other Vaginal Discharge
–  Skin irritation
–  Pain associated with Sexual Intercourse (Dyspareunia)
–  Slight change in smell (Rare)
–  Most often no foul odor is associated with this infection

Treatment:

1.)  Miconazole suppository

2.)  Butoconazole cream

3.)  Clotrimazole vaginal table

4.)  Nystatin topical or powder

5.)  Fluconazole for recurrent infections
